In Memory of Mark Yang

In October of 2010, we lost Joan Sutherland, Paul, the Oracle (Octopus) and our classmate Mark Yang. Indeed, it was a sad month. The world keeps going on & the best we can do is to remember how they changed & influenced us in one way or another. Remember how much joy & happy hours they gave us that sometime we took them as granted. Instead of dwelling in a mourning state, we take pride to have a classmate like Mark Yang & try to memorize him as a scholar, intellect & our classmate. Here I browsed through my photo albums & collected some photos in sequence & presented on YouTubes with a song of farewell. I consider this my way of remembering him & knowing that our email communication & NTUEE64 blog will never be the same without our Mark Yang.

We can access the video via the following link:

PS0: Some photos are the snapshots of some video created in 2007 by 洪 敏 弘 & 孫 芳 德. Their contributions are greatly appreciated.

PS1: The tune was taken from “Ashokan Farewell “ by Jay Ungar. It was used extensively in the TV series, Civil War. I watched it in 1990 & was deeply moved by the tune. I think it is proper & fitting to use it here. Music is truly a universal language.

Let me say a few words with Mark Yang.

Hi, Mark,

I said you are a true intellect; I also said Joan Sutherland was a true artist in our "Home sweet home" blog. I like Mark Lin puts you in the same league with her, for both of you are true to you gifts and talent. Being such a modest and low keyed guy, you may feel a little uncomfortable to be bunched with the high profile sorts. Well, get used to it, Mark.

-------
I would like to propose to the gang of NTUEE64 for a toast to Mark Yang. Have good time in your new world, Mark.

Home Sweet Home
Joan Sutherland was the most prominent soprano (dramatic coloratura, 戲 劇 性 花 腔 女 高 音) of our time. I am not sure this video clip is included in our blog. I just showed it to Wei only some time ago. Anyway I give the link here, so anyone interested can view her last performance in Covent Garden.

Just copy & paste it in the Internet URL space & listen to it. It was her farewell performance. She sang “Home Sweet Home” as she considered Covent Garden her home too.

Some comments on the video of "In Memory of Mark Yang".
0.00-0.14: Good old album was given to me two score & six years ago. Mark Yang was one of the classmates (gave me the album) who wrote his name on the first page.
0.15-0.42: Our freshmen year in Taida. The girls in the photos were from 護 理 系.
0.43-0.57: Visited Mark Yang in 1972 in Gainesville, Florida.
0.53: This was a music session at Mark Yang’s apartment. Sharon was playing piano & Christine (毓翡) was singing. They were performing Mozart’s Exsultate Jubilate, the final section “Alleluja”. Most of you may hear this music during the Christmas time. If you are interested, here is the one sung by Joan Sutherland. Notice that “Alleluja” has been repeated about 25 times. The link is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLMJiNeBhHg&feature=related. Just copy & paste it in the Internet URL space & listen to it.
1.00: The Norweigian Reunion Cruise in 2007. The Celebrity ship moored in the harbor.
1.06: Waiting to board the bus for a land tour
1:11: Group photo before boarding the bus
1:26: Dinner on the ship
1:29: Mark was doing the magic of hiding a pink handkerchief.
1:40: Mark was doing the card magic. This was the magic I learned on the ship from him.
1:46: Everyone was watching something disappeared from Mark’s hands.
1:51: But I held it in my hand.
1:54: Amo tried to give Mark a hard time.
2:04: A casual walk in a Norweigian village. Happy hour.
2:09-2:28: A visit to the home (now a museum) of Edvard Grieg with attending a piano concert.
2:25: After the concert, we were standing outside, the backyard of the house. It was a memorable moment.
2:40-2:47: Mark & Amo tried to give a push with 李 純 儀 protecting from the rear. 葉 公 範 was in the chair.
2:44: It sure took energy to push uphill (three horsepower or three engineers to push a woman). Garbo was taking a picture. All of us (including some strangers) had a good laugh.
2:51: Two Marks were discussing evolution & religion. We were careful not to draw any conclusion.
2:56: Time for meditation
2:59-3:28: Photo sessions before & after dinner
3:29: Time 8:40:47 pm, 08/26/2007, two Marks were discussing the future of mankind.
3:34-3:57: The last evening of the cruise, we witnessed one of the best cooking show we have ever experience. Every plate was a masterpiece. I picked up three decorations (made from actual edible food or vegetable)---swan, eagle & twin birds. Traditionally, these birds mean something very meaningful. Let’s use our imagination to interpret their meanings in the video.
3:39: Mark Yang was still pondering the future of mankind.
4:00: This is the photo I will remember forever.
